Scope Glaucoma Qualification Bursary
What is the Scope Glaucoma Qualification Bursary?
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible sight loss in the UK, affecting over one million people, a figure projected to rise by more than 100,000 by 2030. Glaucoma-related activity already accounts for around 20–25% of hospital eye service outpatient appointments, making it a major contributor to NHS ophthalmology waiting lists.
Recent guidance from the NHS sets out a framework for early detection, risk-based follow-up and multidisciplinary working, with a clear emphasis on the role of primary care optometry in identifying and managing glaucoma patients closer to home, including enhanced case-finding and follow-up care after hospital discharge.
This bursary is positioned to support that shift, helping optometrists build the qualifications needed to take on a greater role in glaucoma pathways, in line with the direction set out in the GIRFT* guidance.
