Delivered in partnership with Specialised Ophthalmic Services (SOS) and led by renowned optometrist and dry eye specialist Sarah Farrant, alongside Charles Greenwood, co-founder and Director of SOS with extensive experience in ophthalmic education and community service development.

Introductory Session: Foundations of Meibomian Gland Expression – 30 MINS

Ideal for optometrists who are new to meibomian gland expression or looking to build confidence in their technique. This practical session will focus on:

The role of meibomian gland expression in dry eye diagnosis and treatment planning
When and why expression should be incorporated into routine dry eye assessments
A step-by-step approach to safe and effective gland expression
Hands-on practice with expert guidance and supervision

Advanced Session: Refining Technique & Maximising Clinical Value – 30 MINS

Designed for optometrists who already perform meibomian gland expression and want to take their skills to the next level. This advanced, hands-on session will focus on:

Refining expression techniques to maximise diagnostic insight and therapeutic benefit
Advanced skills including golf club debridement and debulking techniques
Troubleshooting challenging cases and poor gland expression outcomes
Learning directly from a world-leading expert in Dry Eye Disease

Meet Your Experts

Sarah Farrant

Optometrist | Dry Eye Specialist | Specialised Ophthalmic Services (SOS)

Sarah Farrant is a Director at Earlam and Christopher Optometrists, an Optometrist and Dry Eye Specialist and acts as a consultant and key opinion leader for a number of national and global companies. Sarah has a great passion for her work which is reflected in the wide variety of different interests she has within the profession. She has undertaken a number of additional qualifications and is a leading national expert in therapeutics and dry eye management and represents the UK as an Ambassador for TFOS. She is currently immediate past president for the BCLA and sat for 12 years on the executive and council boards for the College of Optometrists. She has been instrumental in a number of local and national initiatives in order to improve access to education amongst the profession and access to eye care for patients. She is also a keen lecturer and regularly lectures both nationally and internationally.

Charles Greenwood

Director | Specialised Ophthalmic Services (SOS)

Charles has worked in the optical sector since 1995, firstly at the College of Optometrists initially running the pre-registration year and then moving to the Head of Training role with responsibility for the CET (now CPD) scheme and DOCET. In 2004, he established JCL Consulting which initially provided support to Local Optical Committees (LOCs) but has expanded its role to additionally support Primary Eyecare Companies in running multiple Community Eyecare services across the country. He established Specialised Ophthalmic Services (SOS) with Sarah Farrant in 2010 following the successful launch of the Somerset ACES service.
