Celebrating Innovation in Glaucoma Care: UKEGS Video Competition Winners

The UK & Eire Glaucoma Society (UKEGS) Video Competition was launched to encourage clinicians to share practical insights, surgical techniques and patient-centred innovations that support better glaucoma care.

Supported by an educational grant from Scope Ophthalmics, the competition invited UKEGS members to submit short videos highlighting topics relevant to glaucoma management — from surgical approaches and complex cases to educational initiatives that could help improve patient outcomes. Videos were assessed by the UKEGS committee based on clarity, relevance and their potential impact on raising awareness, improving diagnosis or enabling access to effective care.

The winning videos were presented at the UKEGS meeting in Edinburgh, offering delegates an opportunity to see real-world cases, innovative techniques and thoughtful reflections on glaucoma management in practice.

UKEGS Video Contest – Winners & Finalists

Slow the Flow: Management of an Overdraining PreserFlo

This surgical case video presents the management of post-operative hypotony following PreserFlo microshunt implantation in a patient with advanced primary open-angle glaucoma.

The patient returned shortly after surgery with a shallow anterior chamber, choroidal effusions and low intraocular pressure. The video demonstrates the intraoperative decision-making process involved in revising an overdraining PreserFlo device, including the use of intraluminal stenting and ligation techniques to control flow.

By illustrating practical surgical steps and management strategies, this video highlights important considerations when addressing complications associated with microshunt surgery and provides valuable insights for glaucoma surgeons managing similar cases.

Under Pressure? How About a Massage?

This case-based presentation explores the role of patient-led ocular massage following trabeculectomy surgery.

The video follows a highly engaged patient with progressive glaucoma who underwent bilateral trabeculectomies and subsequent needling procedures. Using home intraocular pressure monitoring with the iCare HOME2 device, the patient was able to monitor pressure fluctuations and perform ocular massage to successfully maintain stable intraocular pressure and visual fields.

The case prompts reflection on the role of patient participation in postoperative management and raises interesting questions about how techniques such as ocular massage can support long-term outcomes following glaucoma surgery.

Minimally Invasive Tube–Hybrids

This video presents a surgical approach for managing a challenging case of uveitic glaucoma in a high-risk patient.

Traditional filtering procedures in these patients may fail due to inflammation and scarring, while tube surgery carries risks such as hypotony. In this case, a minimally invasive tube approach combined with a tube–PreserFlo hybrid technique was used as a primary procedure in a 91-year-old patient with significant surgical risk factors.

The video demonstrates how combining evolving surgical techniques may help address the challenges of managing complex glaucoma cases while balancing the risks of hypotony and bleb fibrosis.
